Episode 2 - 1995

Took me a bit longer to work on this than I thought it would. Oh well, here it is. 15 of my favorite tracks from 1995.

Artist//Song Title//Album

01 - Montell Jordan - This Is How We Do it - This Is How We Do it

Thought I'd kick off this mix right. This IS how we do it... This was released April 1995 as Montell Jordan's debut album.

02 - Monica - Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days) - Miss Thang

This is the 1st single from Monica's debut album. Monica was 15 when this single came out. Insightful for a 15 year old, if I do say so.

03 - TLC - Creep - CrazySexyCool

This single was released at the end of 1994, but it was on Billboard charts in 1995. This is the 1st singe from TLC's 2nd record. This song pretty much just reminds me of Ups-and-Downs roller rink in Escondido. So tight. This will not be the last TLC song in this series of mixtapes. Trust that. RIP L.

04 - Brandy - Baby - Brandy

Album released in 1994, single known in 1995. MOEEEEEEESHAAAAA. Anyways, she was 16 and friends/rivals with Monica for the "Young Female R&B artist" thing during this time. Both good, imo.

05 - Mariah Carey - Fantasy - Daydream

Fuck. Seriously one of the greatest R&B records and artists of all time. Haters beware. This is one of my favorite R&B tracks ever. So good. The music video is good, too. Mariah Carey will be in this series a lot.

06 - TLC - Waterfalls - CrazySexyCool

I had a huge crush on Chile around this time. Also an Ups-and-Down's favorite. No girls would ever skate with me, though. Haha. This whole record is a jammer.

07 - R.Kelly - You Remind Me of Something - R.Kelly

This is where the mix flips. Another jam from the king himself. He even samples this, HIS OWN SONG, for his song Ignition in 2003. This song was #31 on VH1's list of the most awesomely bad songs ever.

08 - All 4 One - I Can Love You Like That - And The Music Speaks

1st song off of All 4 One's 2nd studio album. Not much to say, really.

09 - Brian McKnight - Crazy Love - I Remember You

2nd Studio album. This song features Van Morrison. Another sensual love song on this half of the mixtape. This definitely will not be the last you hear from Brian McKnight.

10 - Blackstreet - Before I Let You Go - Blackstreet

1st studio album. More of a soft jams record then the following record, but good all the same. Released on Interscope records.

11 - Seal - Kiss From A Rose - Seal (aka Seal II)

C'mon! This HAS to be on here. This is also on the Batman Forever soundtrack. Seal doesn't let the marks on his face stop him from writing jams. Your mom probably likes this song, too. Mine does, at least.

12 - Luther Vandross - Always And Forever - Songs

OHHHHHHH, yes THIS is who Jaime Fox is talking about. This is a cover of British funk/disco band Heatwave. Heatwave is the band that wrote that song "Boogie Nights". This is the 10th, yes 10th, album by Luther Vandross. The man is a Legend. Enjoy.

13 - D'Angelo - Brown Sugar - Brown Sugar

Title track. Recorded is Sacramento. Cool.

14 - Jodeci - Freek 'N' You - The Show, The Afterparty, The Hotel

Third studio album. Hilarious title. The opening lyric is "Every time I close my eyes, I wake up feeling so horny." The beat for this song was also used for Genuine's "Pony". "Pony" is on next years mix. JAMZ.

15 - Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby - Daydream

Can't say anything I haven't already said.

Episode 1 - 1994

This is my first post. I chose to start this blog at 1994 because that is the year that R. Kelly's "Bump 'n' Grind" was on the billboard charts. Great R&B jam. Here's what's up on this mixtape:

Artist//Song Title//Album

01 - R. Kelly - Bump 'N' Grind - 12 Play

This song took Ace of Base's "The Sign" out of the #1 spot on billboard charts. One of my favorite R&B songs of all time.

02 - Aaliyah - Back & Forth - Age Ain't Nothing but A Number

This song was actually written by R. Kelly himself.

03 - SWV - Anything (remix feat. Wu Tang) - The Remixes EP

This OG version of this song was released on the 'It's About Time' record in 1992, but this remix was issued on the 1994 release 'The Remixes EP' and I like this version better.

04 - Tony Braxton - I Belong To You - Toni Braxton

This Album came out in 1993, but this song was released W/O video as a single in 1994 as her 5th single off this record. Great song, and there are a ton of authorized different versions of it.

05 - Janet Jackson - And On and On - Any Time, Any Place Single

This is actually the B-side to the U.S. version of the Any Time, Any Place single from her 5th studio album 'Janet'.

06 - Mariah Carey - Without You - Music Box

Though the album was released in 1993, this song was not made a single until 1994. Mariah Carey also released a X-mas album in 1994.

07 - Jodeci - Feenin' - Diary of a Mad Band

An album in 1993 and single in 1994 again. This is off of their 2nd album. Jodeci is a seminal R&B artist of the 1990's.

08 - R. Kelly - Your Body's Calling Me - 12 Play

What can I say? R. Kelly puts in work and it pays off. Norman Brown covers this song in 1996 (not as good) and Biggie actually uses a sample from this song for "It's Unbelievable" on 'Ready to Die'.

09 - All 4 One - I Swear - All 4 One

This is originally a country song by John Micheal Montgomery. This version is better.

10 - Boys II Men - I'll Make Love To You - II

This song was #1 on the Billboard charts for 14 weeks and was also written by Babyface. This track won a Grammy the following year in 1995.

1994 R&B mix

11 - Eamon - Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back) - I Don't Want You Back

What the fuck was I thinking not putting this on the main mix? I can't believe I almost forgot this hit. Oh well, here it is to download. This is one of the greatest R&B songs ever written. Straight up fucking crazy. Also, Donkey Lips from Salute Your Shorts later takes this song and makes it his own. Try and find it, it's pretty hilarious.

Enjoy and get ready for 1995. It was a great year.
